Why Oscilloscope Calibration Matters

Oscilloscopes drift over time through normal use, temperature cycling, and component aging, producing waveform measurements that appear plausible but fall outside specified accuracy. Inaccurate voltage readings and timing errors lead to faulty electronics diagnostics, flawed product validation, and compliance failures. ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO 10012 require calibrated measuring instruments at documented intervals within quality management systems.

For quality managers and compliance officers, a current calibration record confirms that every oscilloscope in the lab or field has verified performance before its readings are used to make design or safety decisions. Medical device, aerospace, and defense quality programs require traceable calibration documentation. An oscilloscope without a current certificate creates an audit gap that can delay product release or trigger a nonconformance.

Regular oscilloscope calibration protects measurement integrity, preserves ISO certification status, and keeps waveform data reliable. Calibration intervals should follow manufacturer recommendations, organizational quality requirements, or applicable regulatory standards, applying whichever interval is most demanding for your application.

How We Calibrate Your Oscilloscopes

Micro Precision follows a documented calibration procedure for every oscilloscope service. Each instrument is received, inspected, tested against NIST-traceable reference standards across its key measurement parameters, adjusted if needed, and returned with a calibration certificate confirming traceability and compliance. Every step follows our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited quality management system.

  1. Receive and Inspect — Log the instrument details upon arrival and assess its condition and configuration before calibration begins.
  2. Performance Testing — Test the oscilloscope’s measurement parameters against NIST-traceable reference standards to determine its current performance status.
  3. Adjustment — Restore any out-of-tolerance measurements to within acceptable limits per manufacturer specifications.
  4. Certification — Issue a calibration certificate documenting measurement results, as-found and as-left data, and a NIST traceability statement.
  5. Return — Return the calibrated oscilloscope with its certificate and a next-calibration-due label.

Our Oscilloscope Calibration Options

Micro Precision offers in-lab and on-site oscilloscope calibration to fit your operational requirements. Both options deliver ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited results with NIST-traceable certificates.

In-lab calibration: Ship your oscilloscopes to one of our 50+ accredited calibration laboratories for service under controlled conditions. Our labs accept both individual instruments and large-volume fleet orders, with standard and rush turnaround options available.

On-site calibration: When instruments cannot be removed from your facility, our field technicians bring NIST-traceable reference standards directly to your location. On-site service minimizes operational downtime and supports continuous compliance for rack-mounted or fixed oscilloscopes.

Faster turnaround service is available for time-sensitive calibration needs. Contact Micro Precision to confirm availability and lead time for your location.

FAQs

Most oscilloscopes require calibration at minimum once per year. Instruments in continuous operation, high-vibration environments, or critical measurement applications may require more frequent calibration per manufacturer guidelines. Any oscilloscope that has been dropped, subjected to electrical overstress, repaired, or is producing inconsistent readings must be recalibrated before returning to service, regardless of the last calibration date.

Oscilloscope calibration verifies and adjusts performance across key measurement parameters including voltage accuracy, time-base accuracy, bandwidth and frequency response, and trigger sensitivity. Parameters are tested against NIST-traceable reference standards, and as-found and as-left measurement data is recorded for every test point. Results are documented in a calibration certificate that confirms traceability and compliance with applicable standards.

Many digital oscilloscopes include a self-calibration routine that compensates for temperature-related drift in internal circuitry. Self-calibration is not a substitute for accredited professional calibration. Professional calibration tests the oscilloscope against external NIST-traceable reference standards, assesses all measurement parameters, and produces a certificate with documented traceability accepted by quality auditors and regulatory bodies.

A compliant oscilloscope calibration certificate includes the instrument model and serial number, calibration date and next-due date, test method, as-found and as-left measurement data for each parameter, pass/fail status, NIST traceability statement, and the calibrating laboratory’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation body name and scope reference. Micro Precision provides this documentation with every calibration service.

Oscilloscope calibration pricing depends on instrument type, bandwidth class, number of channels, and selected service level. Basic analog and lower-bandwidth digital oscilloscopes are generally less expensive to calibrate than high-bandwidth or multi-channel instruments. Contact Micro Precision for a quote based on your instrument inventory and required service level.

Oscilloscope calibration in accredited laboratories is governed by ISO/IEC 17025:2017, which sets requirements for calibration laboratory competence. ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO 10012 define requirements for calibration intervals and measurement management systems. NIST traceability ensures measurement results are referenced to national standards. EURAMET cg-7 provides the technical guidelines for the calibration of oscilloscopes and is followed by accredited labs as a methodology reference.

Micro Precision calibrates a variety of oscilloscope types including analog oscilloscopes, digital storage oscilloscopes (DSOs), mixed-signal oscilloscopes (MSOs), handheld oscilloscopes, and PC-based oscilloscopes. We service major brands including Keysight, Tektronix, Fluke, Rohde and Schwarz, and others. Contact us to confirm coverage for your specific model or brand.
