Why Multimeter Calibration Matters

Multimeters drift over time through normal use, environmental exposure, and component aging — producing readings that appear correct but fall outside their specified accuracy class. Inaccurate measurements lead to incorrect electrical diagnostics, safety risks in critical systems, and failed compliance audits.

For quality managers and compliance officers, a current calibration record confirms that every instrument in the field or lab has verified performance before its readings are used to make decisions. Aerospace, defense, and medical device quality programs require traceable calibration evidence — a multimeter without a current certificate creates an audit gap that can delay certification or trigger a nonconformance.

Regular multimeter calibration protects electrical safety decisions, preserves ISO certification status, and keeps measurement data reliable. Calibration intervals should follow manufacturer recommendations, organizational quality requirements, or applicable regulatory standards — applying whichever interval is most demanding for your application.

How We Calibrate Your Multimeters

Micro Precision follows a documented calibration procedure for every multimeter service. Each instrument is received, inspected, tested against NIST-traceable reference standards, adjusted if needed, and returned with a calibration certificate confirming traceability and compliance. Every step follows our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited quality management system.

  1. Receive and Inspect — Log the instrument details upon arrival and assess its condition and configuration before calibration begins.
  2. Performance Testing — Test the multimeter’s measurement parameters against NIST-traceable reference standards to determine its current performance status.
  3. Adjustment — Restore any out-of-tolerance measurements to within acceptable limits per manufacturer specifications.
  4. Certification — Issue a calibration certificate documenting measurement results, as-found and as-left data, and a NIST traceability statement.
  5. Return — Return the calibrated multimeter with its certificate and a next-calibration-due label.

Our Multimeter Calibration Options

Micro Precision offers in-lab and on-site multimeter calibration to fit your operational requirements. Both options deliver ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited results with NIST-traceable certificates.

In-lab calibration: Ship your multimeters to one of our 50+ accredited calibration laboratories for service under controlled conditions. Our labs accept both individual instruments and large-volume fleet orders, with standard and rush turnaround options available.

On-site calibration: When instruments cannot be removed from your facility, our field technicians bring NIST-traceable reference standards directly to your location. On-site service minimizes operational downtime and supports continuous compliance for fixed or embedded measurement systems.

Rush service is available for time-sensitive calibration needs. Contact Micro Precision to confirm availability and lead time for your location.

FAQs

Most multimeters require calibration at minimum once per year. Instruments used daily in field conditions, high-temperature environments, or safety-critical applications may require calibration every three to six months. Any multimeter that has been dropped, subjected to electrical overload, repaired, or is producing inconsistent readings must be recalibrated before returning to service, regardless of the last calibration date.

Multimeter calibration verifies and adjusts performance across all active measurement functions — typically AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current, resistance, frequency, and continuity. Instruments with additional capabilities such as capacitance, temperature measurement, and diode test include those functions as well. All parameters are tested against NIST-traceable reference standards and results are recorded in the calibration certificate.

A compliant multimeter calibration certificate includes the instrument model and serial number, calibration date and next-due date, test method, as-found and as-left measurement data for each tested parameter, pass/fail status, NIST traceability statement, and the calibrating laboratory’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation body name and scope reference. Micro Precision provides this documentation with every calibration service.

Multimeter calibration pricing depends on instrument type, accuracy class, number of measurement functions, and selected service level. Basic handheld multimeters are generally less expensive to calibrate than precision bench multimeters or high-accuracy laboratory standards. Volume discounts are available for fleet orders. Contact Micro Precision for a quote based on your instrument inventory and required service level.

Multimeter calibration in accredited laboratories is governed by ISO/IEC 17025:2017, which sets requirements for calibration laboratory competence. ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO 10012 define requirements for calibration intervals and measurement management systems. NIST traceability ensures measurement results are referenced to national standards. EURAMET cg-15 provides the technical guidelines for calibrating digital multimeters and is followed by accredited labs as a methodology reference.

In-house multimeter performance checks are possible with appropriate reference standards, but in-house results cannot substitute for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited calibration in most regulated environments. Accredited calibration provides independent traceability documentation, expanded measurement uncertainty data, and a formal certificate that satisfies quality audit requirements. In-house performance checks do not meet the accreditation requirements of aerospace, defense, and medical quality programs.

Micro Precision calibrates a variety of multimeter types including digital multimeters (DMMs), bench multimeters, handheld multimeters, clamp meters, analog multimeters, true RMS multimeters, and auto-ranging models. We service major brands including Fluke, Keysight, Tektronix, Hioki, Keithley, Megger, and others. Contact us to confirm coverage for your specific model or brand.
